KANKOURAN

Now call me pretentious, it's fine I've got a blog for christs sake, but sometimes songs come along that seem to perfectly embody a certain youthful spirit. Kankouran released 'Rivers' all the way back in the murky depths of January, but this is a perfect summer anthem, full of raging hormones, angst and soaring melodies. Check them out, in session, down there somewhere.

First off, where are you in the world right now and what're you working on?
We're all in the UK (Liverpool) at the moment working on the new Kankouran material. We've been rehearsing and writing new material. We have a lot of new songs, just trying to make sure we're 100% happy with everything we show to people.

Could you give a brief Kankouran history?
Kankouran started around December last year, we we're incredibly lucky to get sync with Skins for two songs which Tarek had written. We've seen that as a great platform for which we're super grateful to get more material out to the public. Since December, what can I say? We've been working hard, we all play in a few other bands and produce/engineer too, so we're going at our own pace and enjoying things as much as possible.

Who did you grow up listening to?
We all have different tastes, but to name a collective few, Frank Zappa, Dr John, Bob Marley, Chet Baker, Bruce Springsteen, Oscar Peterson, Keith Jarret, At The Drive-In, Cursive, Small Brown Bike, ABBA, Bee Gees...

Tell us a bit about the most recent song you've written.
One of our most recent songs is about a daughter and her struggle to separate, escape from a life she doesn't want to lead anymore, a life her mother brought her into. She tries to leave her past behind and to start again.

What's the strangest subject you've ever written a song about?
Heaven.

What would you say was the perfect environment or situation to listen to your music in?
Headphones, anywhere. We love to create soundscapes and atmospheric nuances that are easy to miss on speakers/laptops

What other artists are you into at the moment?
Connan Mockasin, Wavves, Ty Segal, 40 Winks, Black Lips, Arcade Fire, M Ward, Girls, Magic Kids, Maps & Atlases.
As well as amazing friends of ours Jethro Fox, Dan Croll, Mikhael Paskalev, and Jonas Alaska and many more...

Where would you love to tour?
Africa. It would be cool to start in Morocco and drive all the way down the west coast, through the Sahara, past Senegal, Gambia, and further into Guinea-Bissau and so forth, all the way down. Obviously we'd miss the whole east coast sadly, but we would do that side the next time round.

Finally, what's next for you, future plans and such?
Lots to come. Music. Tours. Videos. Inbetween stuff. We're trying to take our time and go at our own pace and enjoy the ride.
